Women may not be the best drivers on the road. But this doesn’t mean that just because you’re a woman, you need not know anything about your car. Generally, when people are behind the wheel, there are no gender differences; no man-are-more-superior-than women attitude. When you are behind the wheel, it doesn’t matter whether you have XX or XY chromosome. What matters is your driving capability.

We cannot deny the fact, though, that when it comes to driving, women are more anxious than men. Perhaps because men are stereotyped to rule the road, or because men are intimidating when they are behind the wheel. Similarly, a lot of women admit that they are not too comfortable of their driving skills, particularly when it comes to parking. Squeezing into tight spots would often send a woman driver into a tailspin. In most instances, a woman is likely to ask someone else to park her car.

But this shouldn’t be the case all the time. If you are an anxious parker, now is the best time to step up and overcome that fear. Don’t be type casted as a weak female driver. Here’s what you can do to get the myths on women and parking deconstructed forever:

Be confident

You have every right as a woman to be on the road. Don’t be intimidated with what your guy pals are telling you about your driving skills. If they think you are lousy at parking, show them they are wrong. Bring out the machismo in you and show them that you can be a better driver than they are.

Practice. Practice.

How would you prove to your pals that you have excellent parking skills? Easy. Practice a lot. This may sound superfluous, but practice do make perfect. In order to master your parking skills, it’s important that you take a lot of practical exercises. At first, practice in a wide space with little or no obstacles at all. Then gradually upgrade the parking space, putting obstacles one after another until such time that you get confident when parking in tight spaces. It may take you days, weeks, or months to get confident with your parking, but when you do get it the hard work is all worth it.

Check your mirrors

Parking doesn’t only involve turning the wheel to the appropriate maneuver or stepping on the brakes on time to keep you from bumping onto the parked cars. It also involves using your rearview mirror. Remember that you don’t have full view of what happening around you. And you don’t want to be surprised of a screaming pedestrian underneath your car. So, make sure to check the mirrors before reversing.

Choose parking spaces carefully

Now that you have practiced a lot and have mastered the true art of parking, don’t assume that parking would be very easy after that. You might have the right skill when it comes to parking, but if you just park anywhere you’re as good as the lamest driver on the road. Keep in mind that there are designated parking spaces. If you just park anywhere, it doesn’t only make parking difficult but you risk getting a ticket or worse having your car stolen.

Park safely

So, go out there and practice your parking skills. Remember that even though men are considered the best drivers out there, there’s no reason women can’t do it.
