Hip hop is not just a style of music as some people would have you believe. To say it is would just be an easy way out of explaining the true meaning of hip hop. Hip hop is also a cultural movement that includes graffiti writing, emceeing and DJing that was started to express social freedom. The hip hop movement began in the late 70s and into the early 80s and continued growing in popularity into today's current times.  Hip hop music can't be classified as one type of music, just like most music. It isn't really a genre of sorts like that of Classical, Oldies or Death metal. The different styles of hip-hop music include gangster, rap, g-funk, east coast, west coast, dirty south, Midwest and more.

Each style as its own distinct feel to it and greatly relates to what is going on in the communities in that area. Each style sounds distinctly different to the others. Commercial hip-hop tends to sound similar to each other, which is why it tends to stay popular.  Hip hop has taken off all over the world and tends to be a growing all over the world in different societies. Australia, Germany, France and Asia are just a few places that have a large growing hip hop culture. From musical concerts to theatrical productions to movie productions, hip hop is interjecting itself into aspects of our everyday lives. Heck, they even have hip hop forums nowadays with all kinds of cool information, downloads, hip hop music review sections, celebrity gossip, etc.

I like the forum options because it really gives you a chance as a lover of hip hop to talk to others just like you.  Hip hop may have started off as a cultural movement to show people the injustices in the African-American culture back in the 70s, but it has grown into so much more. Society has come a long way from the racial and cultural injustices that used to happen. The hip-hop music from when the movement started often spoke of these injustices and was very political. In the 80s the music was still very political, but started a trend towards party music as well. The 90s brought gangster rap onto the hip hop scene and also a bad 'rap' from people including politicians such as ex-vice president Dan Quail.

The negative publicity didn't hinder hip hop's success, though. In the 2000s the hip hop scene has become widely accepted and even seen blended with other music styles as well.  Hip hop isn't JUST music. It isn't JUST a culture. It isn't even JUST a movement. It's a part of our everday lives now, whether you like it or not. It's on our radios, viewed on our televisions and seen in our art. The culture has grown into something of a phenomenon with how quickly it has become popular in such a short amount of time. With other music and cultures already having a strong following, the idea that something can come along and gain so much momentum is very exciting.
